Nikah Nama in Pakistan – Complete Guide to Form, Clauses & Registration

Nikah Nama preparation, review, registration, certified copies and overseas documentation assistance

A Nikah Nama is not merely a ceremonial paper signed during a Muslim wedding. In Pakistan, it is the prescribed written marriage contract and a central part of the legal registration record. It records the identities of the bride and groom, witnesses, Haq Mehr, agreed conditions, delegated divorce where applicable, representation through a Vakil, and the particulars required for registration.

Nikah Services Worldwide assists couples in Pakistan and overseas with Nikah Nama preparation, careful completion, registration guidance, certified or duplicate copies, correction issues, English translation and marriage documentation for foreign use.

What Is a Nikah Nama?

The Nikah Nama, also written as Nikahnama or Nikkah Nama, is the formal document used to record a Muslim marriage in Pakistan. It combines two important functions: it records the marriage itself and it records contractual terms that may have continuing legal consequences for the spouses.

Section 5 of the Muslim Family Laws Ordinance, 1961 requires every marriage solemnised under Muslim law to be registered in accordance with the Ordinance. The rules made under that law prescribe the Nikah Nama in Form II. The traditional Form II contains 25 numbered entries as well as signatures relating to the parties, representatives, witnesses, person solemnising the marriage and Nikah Registrar.

Because the Nikah Nama records enforceable matters such as dower and agreed conditions, both parties should understand its contents before they sign it.

Nikah Nama at a Glance

Topic What the Nikah Nama Records
Parties Bride, groom, parentage, residence and age particulars
Representation Vakil or representative details where applicable
Witnesses Witnesses connected with representation and the marriage
Marriage Date and place of solemnisation
Haq Mehr Amount, prompt/deferred portions, payment and property in lieu of dower
Special conditions Lawful conditions mutually agreed by the parties
Divorce provisions Delegated divorce and any agreed restriction relating to the husband’s right of divorce
Other agreement Reference to a separate document concerning dower, maintenance or related matters
Existing marriage Information relevant to an existing wife and Arbitration Council permission where applicable
Registration Person solemnising the marriage, date of registration and registration particulars

Legal Basis of Nikah Nama in Pakistan

The legal foundation of Muslim marriage registration in Pakistan is the Muslim Family Laws Ordinance, 1961 and the rules made under it, subject to applicable provincial law and local procedure. Section 5 requires registration of Muslim marriages and provides for licensed Nikah Registrars. The rules prescribe a register of Nikah Namas in Form II and set out the registration process.

This distinction matters: a Nikah may be solemnised by a person other than the licensed Nikah Registrar, but the prescribed documentation must still be delivered for registration through the legally applicable process. Couples should therefore distinguish between the person who solemnises the Nikah and the official registration function.

Nikah Nama Form II – Understanding the 25 Columns

One reason people later face disputes is that the Nikah Nama is signed quickly without reading the numbered entries. The following overview explains the structure of the traditional Form II in practical terms. Local forms may include additional provincial or administrative fields, so the form actually being used should always be reviewed.

Columns 1–6: Place, Bride and Groom

These entries identify the place of marriage and record the bride’s and groom’s basic particulars, including parentage, residence and age. Names and identity details should match the parties’ official documents as closely as possible.

Columns 7–12: Vakils, Witnesses and Date of Marriage

These entries address any Vakil appointed by the bride or groom, witnesses to the appointment of a Vakil, witnesses to the marriage, and the date on which the marriage was solemnised. Where a party is overseas or represented through authority, careful documentation becomes particularly important.

Columns 13–16: Haq Mehr or Dower

These are among the most frequently disputed parts of a Nikah Nama. They record the amount of Haq Mehr, how much is prompt and how much is deferred, whether any dower was paid at the time of marriage, and whether any property was given in lieu of all or part of the dower.

Do not write vague descriptions of property. Where property forms part of dower, its identity and agreed value should be stated with sufficient clarity to reduce future disagreement. Courts have repeatedly had to interpret disputed dower entries in Nikah Namas, which demonstrates why precise drafting matters.

Column 17: Special Conditions

Column 17 permits special conditions to be recorded. Couples sometimes ignore this space or insert vague wording. A condition should instead be clear, lawful, realistic and capable of being understood later without guesswork.

Examples may concern agreed residence, education, employment, financial arrangements or another lawful matter important to the spouses. Whether a particular condition is enforceable depends on its wording and the applicable law, so important conditions should be reviewed professionally before signing.

Column 18: Delegated Right of Divorce – Talaq-e-Tafweez

Column 18 asks whether the husband has delegated the power of divorce to the wife and, if so, under what conditions. This is commonly called talaq-e-tafweez.

This entry should not be crossed out, filled mechanically or left to assumption without the parties understanding what has been agreed. Delegation of divorce is legally different from Khula through the Family Court.

Column 19: Curtailment of the Husband’s Right of Divorce

Column 19 asks whether the husband’s right of divorce is in any way curtailed. Any wording inserted here should be understood together with the rest of the Nikah Nama and any separate marital agreement.

Column 20: Separate Document Relating to Dower, Maintenance or Other Terms

Column 20 records whether another document was drawn up at the time of marriage concerning dower, maintenance or related matters, and if so, its contents in brief. Where a separate agreement exists, the Nikah Nama and that document should be consistent rather than contradictory.

Columns 21–22: Existing Marriage and Arbitration Council Permission

These entries address whether the bridegroom has an existing wife and, where relevant, permission of the Arbitration Council to contract another marriage. Second-marriage questions are legally sensitive and should not be reduced to a routine tick-box exercise.

Columns 23–25: Solemnisation and Registration

The final entries identify the person who solemnised the marriage and record registration-related particulars, including the date of registration. The required signatures and the Nikah Registrar’s seal complete the formal record.

Why You Should Read the Nikah Nama Before Signing

The Nikah Nama is a contract. A wedding ceremony is not the right time to discover for the first time what has been written in the dower, special-condition or delegated-divorce entries.

  • Check the spelling of names, CNIC/NICOP particulars and addresses.
  • Confirm the exact Haq Mehr and whether it is prompt, deferred or partly both.
  • Describe any property forming part of dower accurately.
  • Read every special condition before accepting it.
  • Understand the effect of Column 18 and any conditions attached to delegation of divorce.
  • Do not permit important entries to be altered or crossed out without understanding why.
  • Check the signatures, witnesses and registration particulars.
  • Keep your own copy safely after registration.

Nikah Nama vs Marriage Registration Certificate

The Nikah Nama and the computerised Marriage Registration Certificate (MRC) are not the same document.

Document Purpose
Nikah Nama The detailed marriage contract and prescribed registration form containing the terms and particulars of the Muslim marriage.
Registered / certified Nikah Nama copy A copy obtained from or authenticated through the relevant registration record.
Marriage Registration Certificate (MRC) A later computerised civil-registration record issued through the relevant local authority’s system.
English translation A translation of the Nikah Nama or marriage document for an authority that requires English.
Attested document A marriage document authenticated for official or foreign use according to the receiving authority’s requirements.

For the registration process itself, see our detailed guide to Nikah Registration in Pakistan.

What Is a “NADRA Nikah Nama”?

“NADRA Nikah Nama” is a popular search term, but it often causes confusion. The original Nikah Nama is not replaced by a document directly issued by NADRA. The Nikah Nama is completed and registered through the applicable Nikah Registrar and local registration authority process. A separate computerised Marriage Registration Certificate may later be generated through the relevant civil-registration system.

It is therefore better to identify exactly what the receiving authority wants: the original or certified Nikah Nama, an MRC, an English translation, an attested version, or a combination of these documents.

How Nikah Nama Registration Works

  1. Marriage particulars are confirmed: identities, witnesses, Haq Mehr, conditions and representation are established.
  2. Form II is completed: the prescribed Nikah Nama is filled carefully.
  3. Required persons sign: the parties or representatives, relevant witnesses and the person solemnising the marriage sign where required.
  4. The marriage is reported for registration: the documentation is processed through the licensed Nikah Registrar and relevant local authority according to the applicable jurisdiction.
  5. Copies and records are preserved: the registered record is maintained and the parties should keep their copies safely.
  6. Computerised documentation may follow: where required, the appropriate Marriage Registration Certificate can be obtained through the local civil-registration process.

Documents Commonly Needed for Nikah Nama Preparation and Registration

Exact requirements vary by city, province, nationality, marital status and the circumstances of the marriage. Common requirements can include:

  • CNIC or NICOP of the bride and groom;
  • passport details for foreign or overseas parties;
  • correct parentage and address particulars;
  • witness details and identity documents;
  • agreed Haq Mehr particulars;
  • previous divorce, Khula or death documentation where relevant;
  • Vakil / authority documentation where one party is represented; and
  • additional documents required by the relevant local registration authority.

Nikah Nama for Overseas Pakistanis

Overseas Pakistanis frequently require a Nikah Nama for spouse visas, immigration files, family registration, embassy work or other official purposes. Additional issues arise when one spouse is abroad, a Vakil acts in Pakistan, the marriage took place outside Pakistan, or a document must be attested for foreign use.

The rules made under the Muslim Family Laws Ordinance also address marriages solemnised outside Pakistan in relevant circumstances. The correct route depends upon nationality, residence, place of solemnisation and where the marriage is intended to be registered or used.

If the ceremony itself is being arranged remotely, see our Online Nikah in Pakistan & Worldwide page.

Nikah Nama for Foreign Nationals

Where a Pakistani marries a foreign national, the documentation should be reviewed before the ceremony. Passport particulars, immigration status, religion where relevant, marital status, translations and foreign-use requirements can all affect the practical process.

Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs currently lists additional supporting documents for attestation of a Nikah Nama / Marriage Registration Certificate involving a foreign national. Couples planning embassy, visa or immigration use should check the receiving authority’s requirements before finalising the documentation.

English Nikah Nama Translation

The prescribed Nikah Nama is commonly completed in Urdu. An English translation of the Nikah Nama may be required for a foreign embassy, spouse visa, immigration authority, court, university, employer or other institution.

The translation should accurately reproduce names, dates, dower terms, conditions and registration particulars. Where the receiving authority requires attestation, notarisation or another authentication step, those requirements should be confirmed separately.

MOFA Attestation of Nikah Nama

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs publishes requirements for attestation of Nikah Nama and Marriage Registration Certificates. Its current guidance distinguishes the original Nikah Nama from the Marriage Registration Certificate and lists supporting identity documents. It also addresses online marriages, foreign-national marriages and marriages solemnised abroad.

Because attestation requirements can change, documents intended for overseas use should be checked against the current requirements of MOFA, the relevant embassy and the ultimate receiving authority.

Duplicate or Certified Copy of Nikah Nama

If the original Nikah Nama has been lost, damaged or is unavailable, the solution is not to create a replacement document from memory. Where the marriage was properly registered, the correct approach is to trace the registration record and seek the appropriate certified or duplicate copy from the competent authority.

The information needed to trace a record can include the names of the spouses and their fathers, date and place of marriage, Union Council or registration jurisdiction, Nikah Registrar details and other identifying information.

Correction in Nikah Nama

A wrong name, CNIC digit, date or other clerical detail can create problems in immigration, identity records and litigation. Corrections should be addressed as soon as discovered.

There is an important difference between a clerical correction and a substantive disputed change. Correcting a spelling error is not the same as altering the amount of Haq Mehr, adding a property obligation or changing a contractual condition after the marriage. A substantive or disputed matter may require legal proceedings or another formal route rather than a simple administrative amendment.

Nikah Nama PDF, Sample or Blank Form

People often search for a Nikah Nama PDF, sample Nikah Nama or blank Nikah Nama form. A sample is useful for learning what the form contains, but a downloaded template should not be treated as a substitute for the prescribed form, a licensed Nikah Registrar or the applicable registration process.

Before the wedding, the best use of a sample is to review the important entries—especially Haq Mehr, special conditions and delegated divorce—so that the couple can make informed decisions before the official form is completed.

Online Nikah Nama and Remote Marriage

An Online Nikah can still require a properly completed Nikah Nama and registration process. Video communication is only the medium through which participants may communicate; it does not replace the prescribed marriage documentation.

Pakistan’s MOFA attestation guidance expressly states that where a marriage took place online, its current attestation requirements for the Nikah Nama / MRC still apply, including signatures and supporting documentation. This is especially important for overseas couples who expect to use their marriage documents for visas or immigration.

Common Nikah Nama Mistakes to Avoid

  • Signing without reading the form.
  • Leaving critical contractual entries to assumptions.
  • Using inconsistent names or identity particulars.
  • Recording Haq Mehr vaguely.
  • Failing to identify property accurately where property forms part of dower.
  • Crossing out clauses without the parties understanding the effect.
  • Writing vague special conditions that are difficult to interpret.
  • Confusing the Nikah Nama with the later Marriage Registration Certificate.
  • Failing to preserve a readable copy.
  • Waiting until a visa application or dispute arises before correcting obvious record errors.

Form II is the prescribed form of Nikah Nama under the rules made under the Muslim Family Laws Ordinance, 1961. It contains the numbered entries used to record the marriage and its contractual terms.

4. How many columns are there in a Pakistani Nikah Nama?

5. What information is written in a Nikah Nama?

It records details such as the bride and groom, ages, representatives where applicable, witnesses, date and place of marriage, Haq Mehr, special conditions, delegated divorce, existing marriage information, person solemnising the Nikah and registration particulars.

6. Which Nikah Nama clauses are most important?

Every entry matters, but the dower provisions, special conditions, delegated right of divorce, any restriction on the husband’s right of divorce, related agreements and existing-marriage disclosures deserve particular attention before signing.

7. What is Haq Mehr in the Nikah Nama?

Haq Mehr or dower is the financial obligation agreed in favour of the wife. The Nikah Nama records the amount and can distinguish prompt and deferred portions, payment at the time of marriage and property given in lieu of dower.

8. What is Clause 17 of the Nikah Nama?

Clause 17 is the space for special conditions agreed between the parties. Any proposed condition should be drafted clearly and reviewed for legality and enforceability rather than being written vaguely.

9. What is Clause 18 of the Nikah Nama?

Clause 18 asks whether the husband has delegated the power of divorce to the wife and, if so, on what conditions. This is commonly referred to as talaq-e-tafweez.

10. What is Clause 19 of the Nikah Nama?

Clause 19 asks whether the husband’s right of divorce is curtailed in any way. Its wording should be read together with the rest of the marriage contract and any separate agreement.

11. What is Clause 20 of the Nikah Nama?

Clause 20 records whether a separate document was drawn up at the time of marriage concerning matters such as dower or maintenance and, if so, its contents in brief.

12. Is a Nikah Nama the same as a marriage certificate?

Not exactly. The Nikah Nama is the detailed marriage contract and registration form. A computerised Marriage Registration Certificate is a separate civil-registration record generated through the relevant local authority’s registration system.

13. Is there a NADRA Nikah Nama?

The phrase NADRA Nikah Nama is commonly used online, but it can be misleading. The original Nikah Nama is prepared and registered through the applicable Nikah Registrar and local authority process; the later computerised Marriage Registration Certificate is a separate document.

14. Who issues the Nikah Nama?

The Nikah Nama is completed in the prescribed form and processed through the licensed Nikah Registrar and the relevant local registration authority in accordance with the applicable law and local procedure.

15. Can I get an English Nikah Nama?

The prescribed Nikah Nama is commonly in Urdu. For immigration, embassy or overseas use, an English translation can be prepared, and additional attestation may be required depending on the receiving authority.

16. Can I obtain a duplicate Nikah Nama?

Where the marriage was properly registered, a certified or duplicate copy may generally be sought from the relevant registration record. The correct authority and procedure depend on where the marriage was registered and the records available.

17. How can mistakes in a Nikah Nama be corrected?

Clerical mistakes should be addressed promptly with the Nikah Registrar and relevant local authority. A substantive or disputed alteration may require a different legal process, so the original record and supporting documents should be reviewed before any correction application.

18. Can a Nikah Nama be corrected after registration?

Possible correction depends on the nature of the error. A spelling or identity-record mistake is different from a disputed change to Haq Mehr, special conditions or another contractual term. The appropriate procedure must be determined from the facts.

19. What documents are needed for Nikah Nama registration?

Requirements depend on location, nationality and marital status, but commonly include identity documents of the bride and groom, witness details, marriage particulars, Haq Mehr terms and any authority documents required for representation.

20. Can an overseas Pakistani complete a Nikah Nama?

Yes, depending on the circumstances. Where a party is abroad, representation through a Vakil or properly drafted authority document may be relevant, and overseas execution or attestation requirements should be considered before the Nikah.

21. Can Nikah Nama be used for a spouse visa?

A registered Nikah Nama and the appropriate Marriage Registration Certificate are commonly relevant to spouse and family visa applications, but the exact documents, translations and attestations depend on the immigration authority and destination country.

22. Does MOFA attest a Nikah Nama?

Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs provides attestation services for marriage documents subject to its current requirements. Its published requirements distinguish the original Nikah Nama and Marriage Registration Certificate and specify supporting identity documents.

23. Can an Online Nikah have a Nikah Nama?

Yes. Where an Online Nikah is connected with Pakistani marriage documentation, the Nikah Nama and registration requirements still need to be completed properly. A video call itself does not replace the prescribed documentation.

24. Should I sign a blank Nikah Nama?

No. Both parties should understand the entries relevant to their marriage before signing. Important terms should not be left to assumption, and alterations or deletions should not be made without the parties understanding their legal effect.

25. How can Nikah.Services help with a Nikah Nama?

Nikah Services Worldwide assists with Nikah Nama preparation and review, registration guidance, copies, correction issues, English translation and overseas-document requirements, according to the facts and jurisdiction of the marriage.
