Why Online Nikah Is Used, and What It Does Not Change
The Requirements of a Valid Nikah Do Not Change Online
An Online Nikah is not a different kind of marriage. The conditions are the same as for any Nikah: identification of the parties, free consent, agreement of Mahr, the Wali where the position followed requires one, competent witnesses, and Ijab-o-Qabool — offer and acceptance — in one sitting.
What changes is the logistics of bringing the parties together, and the documentation that follows. Nothing about distance relaxes any of the requirements above, and no arrangement that omits one of them becomes valid because it was conducted on a screen.
The One-Sitting Requirement Is the Real Question
The condition that causes genuine debate is the requirement that the offer and the acceptance take place in a single sitting, the majlis. Scholars differ on whether parties joined only by a video link are in one sitting for this purpose, and the positions are not identical between the schools.
This is why the Vakil route exists and why it is the safer course. Where the absent party appoints a Vakil who is physically present at the ceremony, the offer and acceptance occur between people in the same room, and the majlis question does not arise at all.

The Online Nikah Process in Pakistan
Step-by-Step Online Nikah Procedure
The sequence below reflects how a remote ceremony is ordinarily arranged and completed.
- Verification of identity and capacity — CNICs or passports, ages, and previous marital status.
- Decision on method — Vakil appointment, or a video-link ceremony, depending on the position followed and where the parties are.
- Written authority for the Vakil, properly drawn and, where the party is abroad, attested as required.
- Bride’s free-will affidavit where applicable, attested by a licensed Justice of Peace or Notary Public.
- Agreement of Mahr and of any conditions to be recorded in the Nikah Nama.
- The ceremony, conducted by an authorised Nikah Khawan, Imam, Qazi or licensed Nikah Registrar, with witnesses present.
- Signing of the Nikah Nama by the parties or their Vakils, and by the witnesses.
- Registration with the Union Council, Cantonment Board or Town or Tehsil Municipal Administration for the area.
- Computerised Marriage Registration Certificate issued by the local authority, and the NADRA record updated thereafter.
Appointing a Vakil
A Vakil acts on the authority of the party who appoints him and within the limits of that authority. The appointment should be in writing, should identify the intended spouse, and should state the Mahr and any conditions the appointing party wishes recorded. Where the appointing party is abroad, the document is usually attested before it is relied upon in Pakistan.
A Vakil appointed loosely, or verbally, is the most common defect we see in remote ceremonies, and it is entirely avoidable.
Witnesses for an Online Nikah
For a Sunni Nikah, two adult sane Muslim male witnesses are required, or one male and two female witnesses. For a Shia Nikah, witnesses are not required in the same religious sense, but Pakistani registration practice still requires them for the legal documentation.

Documents, Requirements and Eligibility for Online Nikah
What Documents Are Needed for an Online Nikah?
CNICs of both parties, or a passport where a party is a foreign national, together with CNIC copies of the witnesses and of the Wali or Vakil where one acts. Photographs may be required by the registering office. A divorce certificate or the death certificate of a previous spouse is needed where either party was previously married, and passport and visa details where a party is a foreign national. An embassy no-objection certificate is not required.
Minimum Legal Age and Capacity
The minimum legal age of marriage is 18 years for both male and female, including Islamabad Capital Territory, Punjab and Sindh. Age and previous marital status are verified before the ceremony is arranged, not afterwards.
The Nikah Nama Still Has to Be Completed Properly
A remote ceremony does not simplify the Nikah Nama. Dower and its prompt and deferred split, any special conditions, and the delegation of the right of divorce all fall to be decided and recorded exactly as they would at a ceremony held in person — and in remote arrangements they are skipped more often, because nobody in the room is the party whose right is at stake. How Long an Online Nikah Takes
The ceremony itself, together with signing of the Nikah Nama and any affidavit, normally takes 20 to 25 minutes. Registration with the authorised Nikah Registrar normally takes one day, or 2 to 3 hours on an urgent basis where that facility is available. Preparing and attesting a Vakil authority from abroad is usually the step that governs the overall timetable, so it should be started first.
Charges depend on the city, whether a Vakil authority has to be prepared and attested, and whether registration, certificate and translation work are handled alongside the ceremony.

Ceremonies are arranged for parties in the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, the Gulf and elsewhere, with the Pakistani registration handled here. A religious ceremony conducted abroad does not, by itself, register anything in Pakistan — that is a separate step, and it is the step overseas couples most often discover too late. Where the parties wish to avoid any later argument about validity, the Vakil route is the more conservative choice. The ruling for a particular set of facts is a matter for a qualified mufti.
